Dishwasher repair

Dishwasher not filling with water in Philadelphia.

A dishwasher that runs its cycle dry has a problem in the fill path, not in the machine itself. That is a short list of small parts, so this is usually a one visit repair.

  • Does the dishwasher start and run its cycle, but no water comes in?
The straightforward case

That puts it in the fill path: the inlet valve, the screen behind it, or the float that tells the machine how full it is. Small parts, and the diagnosis is quick. Before you book, check that the shut off valve under the sink is all the way open, because a valve left closed after plumbing work is the one cause you can fix yourself in a minute.

Why it happens

Why a dishwasher stops filling with water.

The usual culprits, in plain words. I confirm which one it is before quoting anything.
01

Failed water inlet valve

The electric valve behind the kickplate opens to let water in. When its solenoid burns out the machine calls for water and nothing arrives, and the cycle carries on dry. This is the most common cause and a straightforward replacement.
02

Clogged inlet screen or supply line

A small filter screen sits where the supply line meets the valve, and city sediment packs it solid over the years. Water trickles in instead of filling, or stops entirely. Sometimes that is a clean rather than a part, and I say so.
03

Stuck float or float switch

A float in the bottom of the tub is what tells the machine it has enough water. If it sticks up, or its switch fails, the dishwasher believes it is already full and never opens the valve at all.
04

Door latch not reading closed

Most machines will not take water until the latch tells the control the door is shut. A worn latch leaves the dishwasher lit up and running through its cycle with nothing coming in, and it looks exactly like a water problem.

How much does it cost to fix a dishwasher that will not fill?

Every visit starts with a flat $89 diagnostic, and that $89 is applied to the repair. Most repairs of this kind start from $345, including parts, and every job is backed 90 days. If it is not worth fixing, I tell you that instead of selling you a repair.

Why is my dishwasher not filling with water?
The most common cause is the water inlet valve, followed by the screen where the supply line meets it. It can also be a stuck float telling the machine it is already full, or a door latch that has to read closed before the machine will take water.
My dishwasher ran a full cycle with no water in it. Is that harmful?
It can be. Running dry heats and wears the wash pump seal, so stop the cycle and leave the machine off until it is looked at. Waiting turns a small part into a bigger repair.

Can this be fixed in one visit?
Almost always. The inlet valve, the inlet screen and the float switch are common parts I carry, so the diagnosis and the repair usually happen in the same trip.
