  • Does the dryer make a sound when you start it, but the drum does not move?
The straightforward case

That is the belt. It snaps with age and the motor keeps running with nothing to turn. Straightforward to replace.

Why it happens

Why your dryer drum won't turn.

The usual culprits, in plain words. I confirm which one it is before quoting anything.
01

Broken drive belt

Motor humming while the drum sits still is the classic sign of a snapped belt, the thin band that wraps the drum and lives hidden behind the front panel. Nobody can see it from outside, which is exactly why I don't call it the belt until I've had the panel off and looked.
02

Worn drum rollers or glides

The rollers and glides the drum rides on wear flat over time and can bind hard enough that the motor can't turn the drum at all. It looks identical to a snapped belt from the outside, which is why I don't quote off the sound alone.
03

Bad motor or idler pulley

A seized idler pulley or a motor that's lost its strength can't drive the belt, so the drum stays still even though everything else is intact. I test the motor directly rather than replace parts by guesswork.
04

Failed door switch

The door switch tells the dryer it's safe to run. When it fails, the dryer can act completely dead, or start and refuse to turn the drum, until the switch is swapped in. Two very different symptoms, same small part.

How much does it cost to fix a dryer that won't turn?

Every visit starts with a flat $89 diagnostic, and that $89 is applied to the repair. Most won't-turn dryer repairs start from $245, including parts. You get the exact price before any work begins.

Why does my dryer run but the drum not turn?
The belt has snapped. The motor still runs, which is the noise you hear, but nothing is driving the drum any more.
Is a dryer belt worth replacing?
Yes. It is one of the cheapest repairs on a dryer and it buys years, so replacing the machine over a belt makes no sense.
How much does it cost to fix a dryer that won't spin?
A flat $89 diagnostic, credited to the repair when you go ahead.
Do you work on Speed Queen dryers?
Yes. Speed Queen washers and dryers are among the easiest to get parts for, so they are good machines to own and good ones for me to work on.
