Washer repair

Washer door not locking in Philadelphia.

A washer that will not lock, or will not let go, has a problem in the door lock rather than in the wash. It is a small assembly at the edge of the door, and replacing it is a one visit job.

  • Does the door stay unlocked so the cycle never starts, or is it locked shut with the wash still inside?
The straightforward case

Both point at the same part. The lock has to tell the control the door is shut before the machine will run, and it holds the door until the tub has drained and the drum has stopped. When the lock or its switch fails, one of those two things stops happening. Small part, one visit.

Why it happens

Why a washer door stops locking.

The usual culprits, in plain words. I confirm which one it is before quoting anything.
01

There is still water in the tub

Check this before you book anything. A front loader keeps the door shut until it has drained and the drum has stopped, so a cycle that quit part way through leaves the door held closed with water inside. Run a drain or spin cycle, and if the machine will not respond, cut the power at the wall for five minutes. That alone releases a lot of them.
02

Failed door lock assembly

This is the small electric latch that both holds the door and tells the control board it is closed. When its solenoid or its switch fails the machine either refuses to start, because it never sees a closed door, or refuses to let go at the end. It is the most common real fault and a straightforward replacement.
03

Worn lid switch on a top loader

Top loading machines use a lid switch or a lid lock instead of a door latch. When it wears out the washer will not start, or it fills and then refuses to spin, and nothing about the lid looks wrong from the outside.
04

A sagging door or a bent strike

Hinges wear and the door drops a few millimetres, so the latch no longer meets the strike squarely. The lock itself is fine, it is simply not being caught. Sometimes that is an adjustment rather than a part, and I say so.

Why will my washer door not lock?
Most often the door lock assembly has failed, so the machine never sees a closed door and will not begin the cycle. On a top loader the same job is done by the lid switch. It can also be a door that has sagged on its hinges far enough that the latch no longer catches.
My washer door is stuck shut with the wash inside. How do I open it?
Do not force it. Try a drain or spin cycle first, then cut the power at the wall for five minutes, which releases many of them. Most front loaders also have a small drain hose behind the filter panel at the bottom front, and once the water is out the lock usually lets go. Prying the door turns a latch repair into a door repair.

Can this be fixed in one visit?
Almost always. Door lock assemblies and lid switches are common parts I carry, so the diagnosis and the repair usually happen in the same trip.
